Baseline Selling in India

Nelson Fernandes · Updated 31 August 2026
In one paragraph

Baseline Selling is a milestone-centric sales methodology developed by Dave Kurlan in 2005, built on the Objective Management Group's 21-competency science. In India, it is installed as a full sales operating system by BigLeaps Consulting, founded by Nelson Fernandes, for mid-market B2B IT, tech services, and SaaS companies that want forecast credibility at board level.

The methodology, briefly

Baseline Selling maps the sale to the four bases of a baseball diamond. Each base is a defined buyer outcome, not a seller activity: a real first conversation, a documented business case with the cost of inaction, a mapped buying committee with a champion, and demonstrated fit confirmed before the proposal ships. A deal cannot advance in CRM or forecast until its current base is verifiably earned. No exceptions.

Most teams swing for home plate from the dugout: proposals before problems, demos before the cost-of-inaction question. The methodology makes that impossible. The full breakdown, including how it compares with MEDDIC, Sandler, Challenger, and SPIN, is in What is Baseline Selling.

Why India's mid-market needs it

The pattern inside Indian B2B tech firms between Rs 500 crore and Rs 5,000 crore is remarkably consistent: strong delivery, respectable logos, and a sales engine that runs on individual heroics. Decks fly out on the first call. Proposals go to people who never stated a problem. The pipeline fills with deals that were never real, the quarter misses, and the board stops trusting the number.

That behaviour has a name: Premature Pitching Syndrome. It is not cured by another training programme, because training changes vocabulary, not structure. It is cured by an operating system that makes pitching a privilege the buyer grants you.

How the system goes in

Every engagement starts with a diagnostic, because prescription without diagnosis is malpractice, in medicine and in sales. From there, five phases:

  1. Diagnose. Leadership discovery, sales process audit, 21-competency assessment of the team.
  2. Design. A custom Baseline Selling framework mapped to your actual sales motion.
  3. Install. A leadership intensive that standardises the sales language across the organisation.
  4. Implement. Weekly coaching, live deal reviews, CRM aligned to milestone stages.
  5. Scale. Forecast discipline and leadership reviews until the process is institutional.

Two formats carry it: a 2-day immersion for the whole framework with role plays and mock calls, or a 3-month journey that adds group coaching and live-deal strategy support until the discipline holds without me. Individual sales professionals join the Sales Leadership Intensive, a 12-week cohort. Details on both are on the main page.

Who it is for, and who it is not

For: CEOs, CROs, and Sales VPs of mid-market B2B IT, tech services, and SaaS companies in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi NCR, and Mumbai who want 95% forecast accuracy and win rates that climb because discovery got disciplined.

Not for: companies shopping for low-cost sessions, motivational talks, or a quick moral boost before quarter-end. If your organisation will not adopt a structured process, I am the wrong fit, and I will say so on the first call.

The evidence

Exalenze landed their first new logo after engaging with us. Esconet turned one engagement into a 3-year extension. Network Science multiplied qualified-lead conversion five times over. Named clients, verifiable outcomes; the longer versions are on the case studies section of the main page.

The practitioner: 34 years in B2B sales, 21.5 inside Tata and TCS, deal rooms from Goa to global logos. Silicon India Top 10 Sales Coach, 2025.

Start with one deal, not a contract

Three free diagnostics, built from the same discipline the installation runs on: Why They Ghost You mirrors your selling habits, the Deal Reality Check audits one live deal, and the weekly essays at The Baseline show the operating system thinking in public.

Common questions

Who installs Baseline Selling in India?
BigLeaps Consulting, founded by Nelson Fernandes. 34 years in B2B sales, 21.5 inside Tata and TCS. Silicon India Top 10 Sales Coach, 2025.

What is Baseline Selling?
A milestone-centric sales methodology developed by Dave Kurlan in 2005, built on OMG's 21-competency assessment validated against more than 2.5 million salesperson evaluations. Installed properly, it is an operating system, not a script.

How is it different from sales training?
Training gives a team vocabulary for two days and fades within ninety. An installation changes structure: milestones in the CRM, evidence-gated stages, and a coaching cadence until the discipline runs on its own. Motivation decays in weeks. Process compounds for years.

Which companies is it right for?
Mid-market B2B IT, tech services, and SaaS firms, roughly Rs 500 crore to Rs 5,000 crore, whose leadership wants board-level forecast credibility and will adopt a structured process.

How long does it take?
Teams: a 2-day immersion, or a 3-month journey with live-deal coaching. Individuals: the 12-week Sales Leadership Intensive. Diagnostic first, always.

Which cities?
Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi NCR, and Mumbai primarily; delivery across India. Cohorts run online, immersions in person.

Thirty minutes on the state of your sales organisation. No pitch. If I am not the right fit, I will tell you who is.
